IV. The Emperor
The second being whom the Fool meets is his Father, the Emperor, who teaches the concepts of Authority, Structure, Hierarchy, Reward, and Punishment. The Fool begins to notice that there is a pattern and order to existence, and that the physical world responds predictably upon further exploration (such as learning not to touch the stove because “hot” hurts). From the Emperor, the Fool learns the rules of power and engagement, and begins to order the world according to that which is higher than him and that which is lower. Rather than a logical realization, this concept of order is an emotional/gut level response and imprinting. However, the Fool can use the harsh lessons of the Emperor to gain deeper insights into the truths of Retribution and Substitution (rather than sacrifice) as well as how to harmonize the Personal Will with the True Will. |
