The Fool is Innocence incarnate. Whether we protect it, romanticize it, seek it, or mourn the loss of it, we all seem to value this elusive innocence. Neither a static state of being nor a lost quality of youth, innocence is a faculty, an ability that we can all choose to employ at any time that we are able to escape from our preconceptions. Many children naturally use this innate faculty of innocence to look at a thing in its entirety, correctly perceiving the nature of the object without bias and clearly seeing whatever is presented him…that is, until Mother Culture successfully tutors the child to swallow the prejudices and presuppositions of the adults around him, clouding the child’s inner vision. Innocence is all that is necessary to acquire knowledge (a commodity that is scarce in today’s world of rampant emotionalism, propaganda, and misinformation, yet is often considered synonymous with power, attainment, and self-actualization). Innocence is simply approaching each and every new experience with a blank slate or canvas, so that we may see the experience as it is, rather than what we think it should be.
